XIY Arrival Guide: Xi'an Airport to the City, Without the Traps

Xi'an Xianyang International (XIY) is a fair way northwest of the city, and the easy options are the airport metro line (the Airport Intercity line connects toward the city/metro network) and the frequent airport buses, both cheap and direct to city hubs; for door-to-door, use DiDi (China's ride-hailing app, with an English interface), which fixes the fare, or the official taxi rank with the meter on. Don't accept a driver who approaches you in the hall. The bigger 'arrival' priority in China is having a working mobile-payment app (Alipay or WeChat Pay) set up, which you'll want for the metro, DiDi, and nearly everything else.

Effectively yes — China runs on mobile payments (Alipay and WeChat Pay), and cash or foreign cards are awkward or refused in many places, so setting up one of these apps and linking a foreign card (both now support international cards) is the single most useful thing for a smooth Xi'an trip. Do it before you arrive if you can. You can still use cash as a backup — vendors must accept it — and bank ATMs dispense yuan, but having the app makes the metro, DiDi, taxis, shops, and restaurants effortless. Sort the payment app first; the taxi and tea-house/tour cautions in the city are secondary.

For the ride into the city, use DiDi (fixed fare, no Chinese needed) or the official taxi rank with the meter running, and skip drivers who approach you in the hall. The Xi'an-specific scam to know isn't at the airport but relates to the Terracotta Army: fake 'Terracotta' buses and cheap tours that detour to fake-warrior 'factories' and jade/'medicine' shops for commission. So don't book a Terracotta tour from a station or airport tout — use the official Tourism Bus (Line 5/306) from near Xi'an Railway Station, or a reputable, well-reviewed operator, and confirm it goes straight to the genuine museum with no shopping stops. Have your destination in Chinese characters (or set in DiDi), and set up a payment app for a smooth trip.

The airport metro/bus services have limited late hours, so for a late arrival DiDi or the official taxi rank (meter on) is simplest — both operate, and DiDi is easiest with its English interface and fixed fare. Have your hotel's name and address in Chinese characters ready (or set in the app), a working payment app or backup yuan, and head to your accommodation. Xi'an is a very safe city at night; just use DiDi or the official taxi rank rather than a driver who approaches you in the hall, and don't book any 'special tour' from a late-night tout.
